A BRIEF HISTORY
The history starts with the indigenous Chumash People who lived here for thousands of years before the Spanish Empire began officially colonizing the region in 1769. In 1821, under the Mexican Empire, the Ranch was part of the 49,000-acre Rancho Los Alamos Land Grant. The hills above the ranch served as a hideout for bandito Salomon Pico, whose escapades were popularized by the character Zoro. At the time of U.S. statehood in 1850, Santa Barbara County became one of the original counties of California.
Las Cumbres Ranch is a 960 acre, holistically managed and regeneratively grazed cattle ranch since 2020. Regenerative grazing is inspired by ancient patterns of herd migration to sequester carbon, build soil health, and increase the diversity of plants, and wildlife.
