Hey y’all,
Last week we got an early drizzle, but it wasn’t enough to get anything to grow. Think in total it was about 0.1 inch. Now I’m sitting in the fields by the barn, and it smells like rain. Forecast says we’re going to get an inch of water. This time I believe it. The wind is moving, and the air is hot… We might actually get some rain tonight.
We still have more than enough grass to take us through to the growing season, and those long rest periods between grazing are insurance. Still my favorite part of the year is when all the work pays off and that rest turns into recovery.
The seeds are popping up like crazy in the irrigated pasture. The cool season grasses are making a big comeback. Since our summer wasn’t too hot I doubt we’ll have an El Niño year, but I hope I’m wrong.
We’re upping our finishing time from 60 days to 120+ days for more marbling, more fat, and more tender meat. I’m focusing on delivering the best beef the ranch can produce, and all that time invested in bringing perennials to the pastures is about to pay off.

Go cows,
Stefan
PS: I attached a Spotify playlist with what we’ve been listening to on the ranch because I just thought of it and it sounds like fun. This month it’s wonky jazz.
